4)Gigabyte AM3+ AMD 970
The Gigabyte AM3+ AMD 970 motherboard is highly durable and does not bend easily. The motherboard has not exhibited any wear or tear despite switching out multiple GPUs, RAM sticks, and CPUs and moving it to a new PC case. There are two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, DVI, and VGA on the motherboard. I have not experienced any issues with ports becoming loose or inoperative.
The BIOS on this motherboard is very intuitive. Overclockers and control enthusiasts will appreciate that the BIOS accurately displays the CPU’s temperature and has several useful features.

I have not encountered any problems installing the chipset from a CD, and I have not experienced any compatibility issues using external USB devices or internal hardware.
Devices that are plug-and-play-compatible can retrieve drivers, except Xbox 360 controllers connected via a USB 3.0 port. Other controllers have not been tested, but the Xbox 360 Controller will not work through the USB 3.0 ports on this motherboard.
There are a lot of useful features on this motherboard, especially if you are interested in overclocking or maintaining control over temperature or clock speeds.
The BIOS comes with health utilities that you can use to keep track of hardware health (I haven’t encountered any issues with the components, so I’m not sure how accurate these readings are). You can even use cautionary utilities to alert you if the CPU or other members are running hot.

The unlabeled temperatures of 3 motherboard components always appear too hot or warm when using programs like HWMonitor or Speedfan. These three components have not been described anywhere.
Readings are either incorrect or irrelevant due to missing components. The unknown temperatures may not cause concern, but it is still worth noting.
This motherboard has been pleasantly surprising, and I would recommend it for nearly any build. Definitely worth the money!
It fits perfectly in my gaming/media build, and its low cost and ease of use make it a good choice for gamers, enthusiasts, seasoned builders, and even those who are new to building PCs. At this price point, it’s hard to find a better motherboard.
5)ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 AM3+
ASUS boards have been my choice for over ten years, and I have always been satisfied with them. I find them to be clean, well-designed, and relatively robust. I have moved boards between chassis frequently and have not always been gentle. Nothing has gone wrong. I’ve also used various models over the years, such as the AX 88, M3A 32, an L1N64 dual processor, and an M4N98TD. All have worked fine.
ASUS has stopped making dual-processor boards since multicore processors became available. Still, it would be difficult to tell the Crosshair V Formula Z apart from one with an eight-core processor. Having it in two different cases, I have had no problems installing and setting up the board – I have 6 SATA drives and a SATA Bluray, two external USB 3.0 hard drives. A Thrustmaster joystick, a Nikon Slide scanner, and an HP printer used USB 2.0 ports. It’s the same here (but a 1.1 kW power supply to make it all work). The Kingston 1866 DDR3 RAM is no issue with 32 GB.

A standard USB 3.0 motherboard header socket is all you need. An over-the-header pin sleeve is all it takes. The sleeve will come off when you try to remove the connector from a stick USB 3.0 connector. Pull the sleeve from the connector (like a trough with pinholes) and put it back on the board. So far, only two issues have emerged, both of which are quickly resolved.
I would also recommend a second USB 3.0 header. The current header can handle just two devices at once, so if you have two 3.0 ports and they’re connected to the title, an add-on card reader will require the USB 2.0 header, even if it is 3.0. However, a better-seated trough would be nice.
Next, you have to configure RAID in the BIOS. Even though it is a UEFI BIOS, it isn’t easy. The legacy BIOS is used to set up RAID. RAID setup is entered by changing the hard drive settings to RAID and rebooting in legacy mode. Then install Windows 8.1 using the UEFI boot mode and configure your RAID array. Even if your RAID array isn’t your boot drive, you’ll probably have to load the RAID driver when installing Windows because Microsoft seems to think this is an infrequent event. Getting the “Bootable device will not be found” error is not intuitive. Be patient. It may take a while. It was the hardest RAID array I’ve ever set up.

What is Am3+, and what’s its use?
The AM3+ socket was introduced in mid-2011 to upgrade the AM3 socket. A particular AM3+ socket is designed for chips that utilize AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture and are compatible with AM3 processors. It is also compatible with pile driver engineering. To extend your PC’s display by a few degrees, getting an AM3+ processor and socket is essential. A few tech ventures are paying extra attention to the design of motherboards to keep them from becoming warmed when used for an extended period, and make various other general changes that will prolong the life of the motherboard and your PC.
The Best AM3+ Motherboard: What things should consider while buying?
How do you build a custom PC? Do you know what’s essential? Motherboards & processors.
You will need a better AM3+ Motherboard if you have already decided on a processor; let’s say you choose an AM3+ CPU.
You can find the Best AM3+ CPU if you are searching for an AM3+ processor.
Once you’ve chosen a processor, the next step is to pick a motherboard. In addition to supporting your CPU, it should be capable of handling your peripherals and primary components flawlessly and efficiently.
Depending on how compact you need it, you should also consider its size. Additionally, there are numerous things one needs to know about chipsets.
Here are the breakdown points we consider:
- Compatibility with CPUs / CPU sockets / chipsets
- Overclocking / Memory Support
- Cost/Budget
- Dimensions
- Performance
- Additional functionalities & ports required
Compatibility with CPUs / Sockets / Chipsets
It is also time-consuming to select a CPU, but since you are here, we assume you have already chosen an AM3+ processor.
For this type of CPU, make sure the motherboard supports the following chipsets:
The AMD 990FX Chipset, the AMD 990X Chipset, AMD 980G Chipset, and the AMD 970 Chipset.
The CPU socket should be AM3+.
If these are okay, then move on to the next step.
Support for memory
If you are a high-end gamer with many multitasking needs, a motherboard with 32 GB of RAM may not be enough for you.
Our recommendation is to get a motherboard with at least 32 GB of RAM, or if you need more than that, get a piece with support for up to 64 GB of RAM.
As you can see in our list, ASRock has the one with the most support.
Check not just the capacity of the RAM but also the frequency. Does it support overclocking? Is the motherboard compatible with existing RAM sticks if you have already purchased RAM?
These are the fundamental questions you need to ask.
The next step is overclocking: It’s totally up to you. It’s up to you whether you will overclock. Whether you should do it or not is another matter. Most users do not have to do it unless they choose to. With Intel processors, you need to select the Z370 or Z390 Chipset with a CPU having “K” in its name. For AMD, it is much simpler because almost all of their Ryzen chipsets support overclocking.
Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z and MSI 970 GAMING motherboards support the best overclocking and are ideal for such tasks when using AM3+ CPUs.
Budget / Price
How much money do you have to spend? We can refine this question by asking how much you need to pay.
Motherboards range from $70 to more than $300. They differ from every point of view, including build quality, beauty, port availability, and built-in features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Would you like more SATA or USB ports?
Are you interested in a “STyliSH” motherboard? Is RGB important to you?
The price increases or decreases depending on the answers to these questions. Almost always, the “want” rather than “needs” increases costs.
If you require such features in the future, you should pay for them only if you need them.
Is a small or large-sized motherboard required for your system? Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll pretty much know what you’re looking for. It will help you find a good one in the long run.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good AM3+ motherboard?
Top AM3+ motherboard overall
The SABERTOOTH 990FX AM3+ motherboard is part of ASUS’ most popular TUF series. As with Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3 R2, the board we reviewed at the beginning, supports all FX, Phenom II, Athlon II, and Sempron 100 series CPUs.
Why are AM3+ motherboards so expensive?
There are more components on a motherboard that can fail than CPUs, so motherboards are more likely to fail than CPUs.
Will Ryzen work on AM3+?
How compatible are Ryzen processors with AM3+? Incompatible. The Ryzen processors use the am4 socket, which is incompatible with motherboards that use either the am3+ or am3 socket.
Which is better AM3+ or FM2+?
AM3+ sockets are capable of handling faster processors than FM2/FM2+ sockets. But for your purposes, choose whichever is the cheapest option. In APUs that use the FM2+ socket, the GPU is on-die. With one of them, you would not need to purchase a discrete graphics card.
Are AM3 and AM3+ the same?
The AM3+ socket is a modification of the AM3 socket. The new Bulldozer-based AM3+ processors use one additional pin, and it is backward-compatible with AM3 processors as well. The processor does not support DDR2 memory, so it broke backward compatibility with AM2 and AM2+ motherboards.
Conclusion
We discussed here the best budget AM3+ motherboard. In the case of a low budget and professional use, Am3+ processors are the way to go.
Users can take advantage of the overclocking power of these old processors without spending more money on them.
I would recommend the Gigabyte+78LMT-USB3+R2 motherboard, mainly because it comes with some outstanding features that are sure to satisfy your AM3+ processor! We would recommend you go with the MSI motherboard since it is more affordable than the others.
